Community-led Workshops & Events

Our focus in Art as Method is to create access to opportunities that stimulate movement and encourage conversation around community change necessary for an equitable future. Hosted by community members, workshops hosted through the UPROOT Summer event series integrated local artistry and opportunities for NC residents to interact with research, art, and the food system. Hosted at NorthStar – Church of the Arts, these workshops were free and open to the public to ensure all populations who may be under-resources, were not limited in their capacity to engage with both research and art.

Echoes of the In-Between: A Healing Space for Our Food System

CORE UPROOT: Echoes of the In-Between

As we embrace the many paths to healing and wellness in our work, communities, and the food system; we were delighted to host soundbath healing events as part of UPROOT’s Summer event series. Echoes of the In-Between was hosted by Center Street Community’s Imane El Ghazouani – with musical stylings from Tuesday Villane. Open to food systems practitioners and community members, participants enjoyed this vibrant, immersive experience designed to facilitate relaxation and energetic alignment.

BIPOC community members participating in a somatic body workshop. Two people are sitting on the floor, backs to the camera, holding up their arms to the sky. Several other people are standing and talking behind them. They are in a church with natural lighting coming from the left.

This workshop was led by King Sage. Landbody is a somatic release ritual that guides participants through a series of movement and breathing exercises created by King in collaboration with the Lands (earth and water) of the Eno River and the whispers of Spirit. Landbody attempts to help workshop participants reground in nature using our senses and their inherent connection to the natural world around us. Throughout the workshops folx will have the chance to rebuild their sense of inner knowing while deepening their trust of the Land’s capacity to co-hold and transmute our deepest, darkest, and heaviest emotions.

Six BIPOC artists are seating in a semi-circle on a stage in a church. They are speaking on an artist panel. Artwork on panels surround them behind them. The room is dimly lit with a spotlight on the artists on stage.

Our community celebrated the closing of the visionary Summer event series UPROOT with our dual event, the Artists Talk + closing ceremony. Artists shared the influences and inspirations held within their artwork and how artistic expression can be a transformational medium for the individual, and also when applied for societal transformation. As our events drew to a close, our closing ceremony celebrated the communal synergy created through community-centered research.

THANK YOU TO ALL OF THE FARMERS AND FOOD SYSTEM PRACTITIONERS WHOSE INSIGHT IN THIS RESEARCH HAS INSPIRED MANY TO ENVISION A MORE JUST AND EQUITABLE FOOD FUTURE.

WE ALSO THANK THE MANY COMMUNITY MEMBERS, ARTISTS, VOLUNTEERS ORGANIZATIONS, AND PARTICIPANTS WHO ATTENDED EVENTS OR HAVE BEEN INVOLVED IN THE CREATION OF UPROOT: BIPOC VISIONS OF OUR FOOD SYSTEM.
