Workshops – Food Justice is Racial Justice

Our Racial Equity workshops bring awareness to the historical and ongoing impacts of structural racism in and around agricultural production and food systems. Tools offered in this workshop include a shared language, shared framework, and shared history of how barriers inhibit equity in the food system. Together we’ll work to create meaningful goals and identify strategies that encourage racial equity throughout agriculture, food programming, policy, and community.

These workshops occur as a full day experience, held over 2 days. Registered participants are expected to attend both days as each day covers a different aspect of the conversation on Racial Equity and both days describe crucial perspectives that translate the dynamics of inequity.

What do past participants think of this workshop?

What section of this workshop was most useful and resonated with you the most?

“So much was impactful! Personally, the somatic practices meant a lot to me. The history lesson provided the most valuable context for how deeply rooted racial inequities are in our food system. I found the section on language to be the most challenging and confusing, but in many respects to be the most directly related to my work and what I will be wrestling with the most moving forward. “

Would you recommend this learning space to others? Why/why not?

”I would. This presentation was thoughtful, engaging, and had a depth and warmth that felt inviting to the conversation rather than accusatory – I think some participants may have assumed would be present. The interactive pieces were entertaining and engaged the group + the addition of music cool. The somatic integration was also very nurturing in a way I haven’t experienced in many other workshops. ”

“Yes! It was beautiful to see & be part of such authentic and love-filled community happening even in a virtual space, which can definitely be tricky.”

”Yes, it was great for connecting with others, building awareness, and thinking about how to bring some important conversations back to your organizations/teams”

Space is limited for both virtual and in-person events. Information for our Racial Equity Workshops can be found on our Events Page.

Note to participants: The conversation on Racial Inequality in the food system is a diverse topic of many layers that attracts diverse groups, knowledge, and perspectives to the conversation. As a safe space for this conversation, we ask all interested in attending a RE training to be mindful, respectful, and considerate to all participants involved.

BIPOC Leadership Series

With each bite, we all have an impact on our food system. At CORE, we value the cultural, historical, and ancestral storytelling woven into the food, the land and the wisdom of those who care for the seeds, weeds, and trees.

Our BIPOC Leadership Series uplifts the perspectives, voices, and contributions of the diverse farmers, practitioners, scientists, doctors, and community members that make our food system accessible; and the spaces they lead more equitable.

As a series, we interview BIPOC community members and leaders whose valuable insight is leading transformative change in community spaces. We value multi-generational wisdom that rewrites conventional approaches to communal success, fulfillment, equity, and sustainability.

Do you know a BIPOC community member/ and or leader whose wisdom around community, agriculture, culture, land stewardship, and organizing could help ups transition to a more equitable food future?

If so, please fill out the form to nominate them. Our work is meant to be supportive, be nourished, and be rooted in community-led perspectives.

Additional Programming

Nurturing the dreams, goals, development, and leadership – at all ages – is a powerful way to share the knowledge, tools, and wisdom that can support a more equitable, and just – food future. CORE is committed to supporting opportunities that create equity, access, and space for all voices to organize, advocate, and thrive through understanding the food system and the communities that nourish it.

CORE will host 2 identity-based experiences in racially and culturally specific groups. These sessions work towards deepening the internal alignment needed for cross-cultural collaboration and anti-racist practice.

What are past participants taking with them after this workshop?

”I’m leaving with a renewed energy to build equity into my work, engage in my own communities meaningfully, and acknowledge and rewrite the incorrect narratives that pop up in my head as I go throughout my days.”

”Having the ability to be in community with others around this topic provided grounding that has been extremely helpful. It has really supported my individual growth.”

At CORE, we embrace a diverse path to accountability, repair, and healing – for ourselves, our communities, and our relationship to the land. In the past, our Community of Practice consisted of our monthly series known as “ The In-Betweens.”

Our Community of Practice has expanded to include creatively crafted, co-facilitated sessions that offer a space for community leaders, practitioners, and those working in land and agriculture. A space to rest, reflect, and reconnect with purpose.

These healing spaces will be a diverse and eclectic mix of innovative events that will continue to bloom and expand around our community needs.

What are past participants taking with them after this workshop?

“Our stories are interconnected, even if we are not in the same geographic area, white supremacy culture and systems is so deep and rooted in our internal system as well that there’s shared harm/hurt/trauma.”
